How Many Miles Should Tires Last?

Row of tires

Most tires on vehicles like the Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Compass will last about 50,000 miles, but this does depend on how the vehicles are driven, and if the tires in question are up to the OEM quality standards of the tires you can get from our service department. Factors That Affect Tire Life

There are many factors that can change how long your tires will last, including driving habits and tire selection:

  • Type of tire: Snow tires, performance tires, and all-season tires all have varying degrees of wear, and even in those categories there is enough difference to matter between individual models of tires.
  • Treadwear rating: Treadwear rating, often abbreviated “TW” is a three-digit number that corresponds to how hard the rubber compound of the tire is. The higher the number, the harder the compound, and thus the longer it lasts. That said, softer compound tires offer far more grip. 700 TW tires are very long lasting, 500 TW tires are normal tires, 300 TW tires are generally performance-oriented all-season tires, and 200 TW tires are racing tires that can also be used on the street.
  • Drivetrain: Front, all, rear, and four wheel drive vehicles tend to wear tires differently, as the driven wheels tend to experience more wear. To counteract this, tire rotations can be helpful.
  • Road conditions: Rain and snow tend to wear tires slower, while dry pavement is the middle ground and gravel, dirt, and off-road conditions are harder on tires.
  • Terrain: Mountains and hilly areas will wear tires faster, especially the front tires that take most of the braking force when slowing down while going downhill.
  • Driving habits: The harder you drive, the faster your tires will wear.

Tire Care Tips

Taking car of your tires is as easy as driving more smoothly during your Louisville drives, as well as these steps:

  • Inspect for proper air pressure when you fill your gas tank, as many gas stations have tire inflation stations.
  • Regularly inspect tire tread depth for tire tread wear.
  • Rotate your tires for more even distribution of tire wear.
  • Take your vehicle in for regularly scheduled maintenance.
